Swenson House Historical Society: A Glimpse Into Abilene’s Past
The Swenson House Historical Society is one of Abilene, Texas’ most beloved landmarks, offering visitors a window into the city’s vibrant past. Located at 1726 Swenson Street , this elegant two-story mansion was built in 1910 for William Gray and Shirley McCollum Swenson, influential figures in Abilene’s early development. At the time of construction, the house stood on 58 acres of open prairie, far from the city center. Today, it sits on a full city block and continues to be a vital part of Abilene’s cultural and historical identity. Designed by architect William P. Preston, the Swenson House features Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, which was further enhanced by a major renovation in 1928.
