A Storied History The journey of the Abilene Zoo began in 1919 with its establishment in Fair Park, now known as Rose Park. In 1963, the Abilene Zoological Society was formed to support and raise funds for the zoo's expansion. This effort led to the opening of a new, larger facility in Grover Nelson Park in 1966, where the zoo continues to thrive today.
